Advocacy Matters

On Thursday, August 22, the Akron Pride Festival will be hosting an evening with Mara Keisling, the founder and executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, the nation’s leading social justice advocacy organization aiding monumental policies for the trans community. In advance of her visit, Prizm spoke with Keisling to get her take on how to best approach advocacy work that can be reactive, geographic, and draining.

When I offhandedly hear that someone has placed the blame for a national tragedy at the feet of the LGBTQ+ community, I usually just roll my eyes. Rarely do I care about the desperate ravings of some random televangelist (not my faith) or far-away elected dogcatcher (not my community).

Decades of Support

When the Cleveland Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) debuted 34 years ago, the landscape for LGBTQ+ rights was markedly different. The group still sticks to its primary mission to provide support via group meetings, host educational activities at Northeast Ohio employers and universities, and promote advocacy by sponsoring special events and presenting awards.
